Skip doctor wait times and costs by testing your iron levels at home today.
Am I iron deficient?
The main symptoms of iron deficiency are paleness, feeling tired, headaches, faster heartbeat, or shortness of breath during exercise. These symptoms may appear gradually and could go unnoticed.
Anaemia due to iron depletion can occur in children and women of all ages but mainly in women who still have their periods; of this group at least 20% suffer from iron deficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions
Anaemia is a condition characterised by a deficiency of red blood cells or haemoglobin in the blood, leading to reduced oxygen-carrying capacity. Iron deficiency is a common cause of anaemia.
Symptoms of iron deficiency include paleness, fatigue, headaches, a faster heartbeat, shortness of breath during exercise, and, in severe cases, iron deficiency anaemia. These symptoms may develop gradually and might be overlooked.
The Ferritin Rapid Test Cassette is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay. It detects the presence of ferritin in human fingerstick blood, indicating the levels of iron stored in the body. Ferritin is a protein that stores iron, and low levels may suggest iron deficiency.
Normal: Two coloured lines (T and C) appear. Even if the T line is very faint, the test indicates a normal level of ferritin. This result suggests no potential iron deficiency.
Abnormal: Only one coloured line appears under the control line (C). This result indicates low ferritin concentration, suggesting a potential iron deficiency. Consult your doctor in such cases.
Invalid: The control line fails to appear. This could be due to insufficient specimen volume or incorrect procedural techniques. Review the procedure, repeat the test with a new kit, and contact your local distributor if the issue persists.
Smith Biomed Ferritin Tests are available for purchase through various channels, including Chemist Warehouse, local pharmacies and online retailers. Check with your local chemist for availability.
Iron deficiency can result from inadequate absorption, growth periods, pregnancy, and blood loss due to menstruation, abnormal bleeding, or ulcers. Additionally, conditions such as hypothyroidism, vitamin C deficiency, celiac disease, and restless legs syndrome may contribute to low ferritin levels.
Follow the provided instructions:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Use the lancet to obtain a blood sample from your fingertip.
- Collect the blood in the capillary dropper and transfer it to the sample well on the cassette.
- Add a drop of buffer to the sample well.
- Wait for the coloured lines to appear and read the results after 5 minutes. Do not interpret results after 10 minutes.
Testing ferritin levels is crucial for assessing the body’s iron stores. Low ferritin levels can indicate iron deficiency, which, if left untreated, can lead to anaemia and negatively impact overall health.
Yes, low ferritin levels may also indicate conditions such as hypothyroidism, vitamin C deficiency, celiac disease, and restless legs syndrome. Consult your healthcare provider for a comprehensive assessment.
If your test indicates low ferritin levels, it is advisable to consult with your doctor promptly. They can provide further evaluation, determine the underlying cause, and recommend appropriate interventions to address iron deficiency.
